The problem: shared living usually feels like a compromise

  • The problemMost shared houses feel temporary: leftover furniture, unspoken rules, nobody sure what to expect. I wanted sharing my home to feel calm, private, and well made — for me and for whoever lived here.
  • Who it's forProfessionals moving to Denver, often from another city, who want a room that's ready the day they arrive and housemates they can count on.
  • What I didI designed every room, the shared spaces, the house routines, the brand, and the informational website. I live here, so every decision has been tested for ten years.
  • The solutionPrivate rooms designed one at a time, a standard that repeats in all of them, written routines so everyone knows what to expect, and a site that shows what living here is like so the right person recognizes it before they visit.
  • ResultA home people stay in — and the experience that inspired USA Coliving Finder.

Guidelines that create a feeling, not just rules

Every guideline exists because of what it creates — a calm, private, comfortable atmosphere that the right person finds genuinely refreshing. The experience is designed as deliberately as the interiors.

Kristin, Denver Coliving house manager and interior designer

The experience starts with the design

"Denver Coliving was born from a desire to reimagine what shared living can feel like — warm, private, calm, and genuinely well-designed." Compatible housemates, attentive management, and clear expectations turn a shared house into a real home — the experience layer that interior design alone can't deliver.

03 — Web / product design

A website as calm as the house it represents

denvercoliving.com is the digital front door — and I designed it too. The same warm, editorial, natural-light aesthetic carries from the rooms to the screen: an informational, responsive site that shows the right person what living here is like before they ever visit.

  • Story-led IAWhat you get → the rooms → the management → guidelines → availability → neighborhood.
  • Clear next step"Inquire about a room" and "See the house" CTAs placed at every natural decision point.
  • ResponsiveDesigned to read beautifully on phones, where most people browse.
  • Consistent brandSerif headings, calm palette, real photography — the same system as the home itself.

Over the years, denvercoliving.com drew people from across the country who wanted their own shared homes to work better. Those conversations inspired USA Coliving Finder.

04 — House routines

A house that runs calmly, by design

Ten years of care — from the design of each room to the way the house works day to day. The routines exist for consistency: so everyone knows what to expect, the house stays clean, and the vibe is protected.

Cleaning

Professional cleaning Mon/Wed/Fri keeps the home consistently clean — chore-free for everyone who lives here.

All-inclusive costs

One monthly payment covers room, utilities, WiFi, laundry, and cleaning — predictable, with no surprises.

Compatible housemates

Compatible people, welcomed with clear expectations — the basis of a house people stay in.

Month-to-month, by design

30-day minimum, 30-day notice — protects the house culture and gives everyone flexibility.

Snow, maintenance & upkeep

Snow removal and upkeep handled so common spaces stay clean, organized, and ready.

The routines, written down

House guidelines, the welcome, and routines documented so the home works the same for everyone, every time.

05 — The neighborhood

Central, walkable, connected

Cheesman Park, Denver Botanic Gardens, Capitol Hill cafes, and Cherry Creek — all within minutes, on foot or by bike. Location is part of the experience design: a home that lets residents live, work, and explore the city on foot or by bike.

06 — Reflection

What a decade of one home taught me

1

Interior, experience, and product

The room, the house rules, and the website all shape the same thing: how it feels to live here. Designing across all three — instead of treating them as separate jobs — is what makes the whole feel coherent.

2

Living it makes the design honest

Living with my own decisions for ten years is the ultimate user test. Every guideline and routine survived because it actually works — not because it looked good in a deck.

3

One home can inspire a product

The experience of living here — and the conversations it started — inspired USA Coliving Finder. Good design at small scale is the best research for designing at large scale.
